Engine Mechanical problem
1996 Mazda 626 4 cyl Automatic

my 96 mazda 626, ge model, keeps stopping. It usually drives ok for the first 15 minutes, then it will just stop. It does start up again after a few tries. It does it every time we use it. We have had it at 3 mechanics and none can diagnose the problem. So far I have paid a fortune to replace - fuel filter, spark plugs, air flow meter and have had an error removed from the computer (relating to air flow meter). But still no actual diagnosis or fix even though it has been tested on their computers. Any suggestions - we are desperate?

Hi kymberlee_187,

You may need a new distributor since the ignition module may be bad. A bad ignition module will usually function until the distributor heats up. Then, the engine will suddenly stop. After a few minutes of cooling off, the engine will usually start again.

Inspect the ignition module located on your distributor. You may see a hairline crack which would indicate that you probably need a new distributor.

Keep in mind that there are many contributing factors to the symptoms that your vehicle is exhibiting so do not spend money replacing good parts unless you know for sure. Or, you are wealthy. :)

Hi - thanks for the advice. I actually had a new distributor put in about 6 months ago, and then another put in about 3 months before that. The first one was supposedly faulty? I will get my husband to check though. Thanks so much
