Hi.

For sometime now, I have been experiencing some issues with my car whereby after driving more than a mile and coming to a stop (idle) my engine light will start flashing on the dashboard. See steps below that re-creates the issue:

1. Cold engine start - Okay!
2. Driving less than a mile - Okay!
3. Driving more than a mile and coming to a stop (idle) - Engine oil pressure start flashing on the dashboard.
4. If the car is allowed to rest a few hours, the issue disappears, but re-appears again when driving a long distance.

My local mechanic first thought it was the oil pressure switch so we changed that, but still no luck. He removed the oil sump and found some "thick" oil residue in the pan and some of it where clogging the oil screen. He cleaned it, changed the oil and drove a few miles, but issue still remained. So he finally said it "might" be the oil pump so I bought a new one, replaced it, but issue still remains.

Do note that the engine does not make any weird sound or show any signs of engine performance issues. I am really out of options here.

Will you be able to help me in identifying what could be the cause of the issue please?

Manually check oil pressure with a gauge. If okay, when it does it then scan for codes. Also it may be a bad oil filter, Fram is good for this as well as others. This may be a worn bearing problem, but mechanical check of pressure should help.

I have an ODB tester, but no codes are being displayed. I do not have a pressure gauge but my ODB tester has several measurement it does. Can I submit the oil pressure results from the ODM instead?

I don't have any information on this specific Kia but I do work for a Hyundai dealership and I always see problems with oil pressure and such with Hyundais and Kias and its almost always caused by the oil control valves. Some oil control valves have a built in filter that may get clogged and cause oil pressure problems. Some models have the screen separate from the oil control valve. Again, I don't have any information on your vehicle so I don't know what style is equipped on your vehicle. I would try to locate the oil control valve and the oil control valve filter if its separate and just glance at them. You mentioned that the oil looked thick so this could easily cause some blockage in the filters. If the filter is separate from the oil control valve, just clean it off and reinstall. If its not, I would recommend replacing it. Best of luck.

Hi Ed-Weezy21,

I checked visually all sensors on my car but I do not think it has an Oil Control Valve. I even googled on the internet but no results were obtained to confirm if it does have an OCV.

The only thing I found on the car that I thought was the OCV was the Camshaft Position Sensor. Any ideas as to what else could be causing this problem?

Its hard for me to find any real information about this car on my end since I don't have direct access to the vehicle and the vehicle is only made in South Korea. Do you know if this vehicle is equipped with CVVTs?

You're best bet now is to try to perform an oil pressure test like HMAC recommended that way you know if its a mechanical problem or an electrical problem like a sensor.

Hi Ed,

Unfortunately, I do not think it has on either. The only sensor diagram I could find was this one. See attached.

Hey HAWX,

I would do what Hmac300 suggested and check the engine with a manual gauge to see if it is an engine problem or a sensor or an electrical issue.
