Hi,
That is a tough question to answer. What I always tell individuals that are considering high-mileage vehicles is this. Although the engine (in this case 40,000 miles) still runs well, it is important to keep in mind that the rest of the vehicle has 250,000 on it. Things such as wheel bearings, differentials, transfer cases, transmissions, steering components, bushings, steel structural components, suspension components, brake system, electrical components, and the list goes on, wear as well as the engine. If those things haven't been replaced, expect to do it soon. Always remember the old saying, "Buyer Beware." You have the right idea. Don't even consider it without having it inspected by someone you trust.
Let me know if that helps.
Take care,
Joe
