The main key fob takes( 2) 3 volt batteries. The secondary key fob takes (1) 3 volt battery. Why is this? The main one will work but I cannot get the secondary remote key fob to work. How can I program the extra fob to work as well? ( Both fobs came with the car and the batteries are new.) These are for a 1994 Lincoln Towncar.

Sometimes the key fob just stops working, they are cheap electronics and can quit at anytime, here is how to reprogram it though just in case.

Obtain all remote transmitters
Access program connector behind the glove box and taped to the wiring harness.
Switch ignition ON
Momentarily jump program connector terminals
Door should lock then unlock
Remove jump wire program connector
Press any button on the first remote transmitter
Doors should lock then unlock
Press any button on the second remote transmitter
Doors should lock then unlock
Press any button on the third remote transmitter
Doors should lock then unlock
Press any button on the fourth remote transmitter
Doors should lock then unlock

Note: if door locks do not operate: press button again up to a maximum of 3 times

Switch ignition OFF:
Doors should lock then unlock

Note: a maximum of 4 remote transmitters can be programmed

Hi KEN, I tried doing the procedure as you have suggested. Did not work for the second transmitter. Must be burned out. Or I put the battery in wrong, I have the positive side of battery facing the plastic cover? The negative side is facing the push buttons? I still don't get why one has 2 batteries and the other has 1 battery. RB

The two battery thing is weird I will give you that, but no matter the second transmitter must be burned out if it wont work, its a common thing for those to go out or not work. I have even seem new once not work.
