1999 Lincoln Town Car Rear end noises with smell

My car is making this rattling noise in the back on the left side by the tire when I drive. It gets louder when I am coasting, like on the freeway. After a while, it starts to smell like burnt rubber. I looked and cant see anything, but the tire well is full of black suit. What could this be?

Sounds like you have a leaking axle seal. Which most likely has damaged an axle and/or differential and bearings. Its maybe cheaper to replace it with one out of the junkyard rather than repair the old one. If you don't have any good junkyards in your area.
