2002 Kia Sedona Two Wheel Drive Automatic 97k miles

the drive belt keeps coming off when you start
the engine. The car is in a garage at the moment and
they say that this has damaged the alternator and needs replacing at a high cost.

what would be the reasons behind the belt keep coming off

Usually this type of problem is caused by a misalignment of the pulleys. However, what has happened to the alt that it needs replaced? Was it the cause of the problem or are they telling you that the belt damaged it?
