Us vs insurance company

We have a 2005 kia sorento mini suv. It has over 70,000 miles on it and it was stolen one week ago and they wrecked it. The insurance took it to the body shop and the body shop guy asked us to come and see it and they turned on the motor and it now has a knocking noise. The shop guy said that this is a pre-existing problem, and the insurance is probably going to deny claim for the knocking noise. It has been due for an oil change and I was going to do it the weekend it was stolen. The insurance has been nice and hasn't denied it yet. My questions is they found it on its side at a rock pit, Could that have cuased the knocking noise? The person who stole probably reved the heck out of the motor. It wasn't knocking the day it was stolen until they got it to body shop. COuld that have cause it to go bad? Or could it really be a pre-exisiting problem?

If you have all the documentation of the oil changes that meet the "kia recommended intervals", you should be fine.

Did the insurance company tell you where to take it?

I want to say: Pay the towing and get it to a shop you normally deal with if you have trouble. The insurance companies are often in bed with some shops. It certainly makes me uneasy in this situation to accept the pre-existing condition. You will know based on your records however.
