Hi,
I think what they are referring to is the neutral safety switch. That is what prevents the engine from starting unless the transmission is in park or neutral.
I need you to check if the shift lock is preventing the actual shifter from fully returning to park. I am going to provide the directions for replacing the switch. I am not suggesting it be replaced, but this is all I have to help guide you to it. Once you get the console apart, see if there is anything binding.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the center console.
3. Disconnect electrical connector from the shift lock control for the automatic transmission (AT).

4. Remove both ends of the AT shift lock control from pivot points (1).
