My car seems to run good, it idles good and everything. Then the next day it will not idle, keeps shutting off. Then the next time I go to start it it idles fine again. This happens three or four times a week. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.com.

An idle issue can be the result of many things. However, since it comes and goes, I would suspect either there is an issue either with the idle air control valve, the throttle body itself needs cleaned, or a vacuum leak.

Please keep in mind, if the check engine light is on, you should scan the computer to identify trouble codes. Here is a quick video showing it done:

https://youtu.be/b2IJGfImVvw

If you find a trouble code, let me know what it is.

Now, the next thing I would check is for a vacuum leak. Here is a link which describes the process:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-use-an-engine-vacuum

If you find there is no issue with engine vacuum, next inspect the throttle body. Here is a link describing that process:

If that does not appear to be an issue, then I would suspect the idle air control valve is going bad. I attached a picture of one so you can see what it looks like. It is mounted on the throttle body. You need to remove the fuel injector sight shield from the top of the engine to access it. If you replace the component, it has a simple learn procedure. Simply turn the key to the run position (engine off) for ten seconds. After that, turn if off and wait ten seconds. Next start the engine and it should idle at the correct speed.

The picture below is of the component removed. The area being measured is not seen until the component is removed.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,
Joe

Thanks for your response. I tried the second link about the engine vacuum and it says Error 404. But I will try your other suggestions.

Hi again. A P0404 deals directly with the exhaust gas re-circulation circuit (EGR). There is a good chance the EGR valve is damaged because this indicates it is out of range. The EGR is located on the intake manifold of the vehicle. I would recommend removing it and checking its condition. They are known to fail due to carbon build up in the manifold and the control valve which sits in the intake when the component is mounted. I have a feeling that you have a carbon build up problem. When you remove the component, clean the area where it fits into the engine and check it for damage. Also, clean the intake manifold where it sits if there is excessive carbon build up there.

I attached a picture of the valve for you to see. It is for the removal process. I hope it helps. Keep in mind, you will need a new gasket if you reuse the original part. Make sure both surfaces are clean so it seals properly.

Take care and do this first. Let me know what you find.

Joe

Sorry I think you got it confused. I was talking about your link. When I clicked on the engine vacuum link you provided. That is when the error 404 came up. That is what I am talking about.

Thank's for the link. Question, why would it not Idle two or three times a week and the rest of the time it idles fine? I would not think it could be a vacuum leak when it does not happen all the time. Example yesterday my car would not stay running, and today it idles fine!
