The car runs in good condition, but the engine intermittently is hard to start. Sometimes it takes up to ten times to get it running. It seems like there is no fuel supply. Suspecting that it must be the fuel pump, I replaced it three weeks ago. After the pump was replaced, the same thing happened, It still did not start. The pump is working fine I believe, when I turn the ignition you can hear a three second whirring sound. When I jump started the car’s battery, it started. But after a few days of use, the same symptom of intermittent hard starting, and now it even stalls as if there is no fuel going to the carburetor. It would start again after a while, sometimes with just one click, and at times it takes a few attempts to get it running. Just replaced fuel pump (since bought in 2008) due to intermittent stalling.

Please help!

I would highly appreciate any advice.

Many thanks.

With the fuel pump replaced did you change the pump screen? Also, did you replace the fuel filter. Ethenal that they put in the gas can and will clog a pump screen at times letting some fuel through. The whirling sound you hear sounds like the pump is working. They have some products out that clean the fuel system available at most automotive stores.

Hi M_H_RITZEL,

Many thanks for your reply.

With pump screen, did you mean the fuel pump filter? If so, yes I replaced the old pump with a complete unit, but I did not replace the fuel filter. There are times the engine starts with one click and runs fine for a couple of days, but afterwards it goes through an episode of hard starting, sometimes it takes more than seven times, and at times it will not start at all. There was a couple of times that it was running fine then suddenly it stalls as if there is no fuel to burn.

Thanks again for your help.

I would replace the fuel filter. If the problem still occurs then have the fuel pressure checked on the engine.
