Vehicle starts and idles fine but when put in gear it jerks and shuts off. Did it once before and engaging 4wd got it moving, then fine for about a month. Now it will not move, just jerks the truck and shuts off.

More than likely the torque converter is stuck on. Basically, what is happening is the converter is only to come on at certain times but when it is on at idle it stalls the engine. It is just like letting the clutch out on a manual transmission and it stalls the engine.

So, to confirm this we need to start by checking the fluid level and condition. Here is a guide that will help with this:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-and-add-transmission-fluid

Then we need to use a scan tool and check for codes and then monitor the converter clutch solenoid to see if it is remaining engaged. If it is commanded on, then we could have a PCM issue, but I suspect it is stuck which means the converter will need to be replaced.

Once we know what codes are there, if any, we will be able to go a different direction. However, normally there are no codes with this so let's check that and go from there.

Thanks

We replaced the throttle position sensor after turning on the air conditioning before putting it in gear and made it go into gear. It drove with little issue for 2 days then started doing the shutting off and jerking again. It's shifting oddly now also. We're again able to get it moving by turning the air conditioning on.

Just to be sure I understand, the vehicle will jerk and shut off unless you turn the A/C on?

However, the engine will start with no issue and idle just fine but only move unless you turn the A/C on?

Clearly this is an odd issue because the compressor coming on and off has no effect on the operation of the transmission.

So, I am not doubting you, I am just trying to get more info on this to try and figure out what could be causing this to happen.

I am thinking the next thing to try is to remove the drive belt and see if that has an effect on it as well.

I have seen where a locked-up compressor will stall an engine because the drive belt will slow the crank pulley so that it stalls.

However, I have not seen it cause the transmission to not shift so let's cover this info and go from there. Thanks

Could something be lugging the engine down enough to stall the truck when putting it in gear?

Yes. The torque converter as I stated earlier but please review my questions above and let me know that info because if you are turning the A/C on and it doesn't stall then we have to find the connection as it is unlikely to be the case.

Maybe get a video of what is happening and that will help get us on the same page.

Thanks
