Our jeep won't reverse. When we put it into park neutral or reverse it tries to move forward. It also kind of lurches. It runs good and drives fine forward but it will not reverse. We can't seem to figure out the problem. We are thinking new tranny but I was trying to get advice before we go that route. I have searched the internet and have found so many answers and I don't know which is correct. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

It can't move forward in "park" because that locks it mechanically. Even if something is wrong with the hydraulic controls, it can't move. This sounds like there's something wrong with the shifter cable. Either an anchor is rusted and flexing or the end of the cable is loose. To verify this, shift to "park", stop the engine, then try to push the vehicle or let it coast downhill. If it moves, it's not shifted all the way into "park".
