I have a steady, high-pitched whine that is coming from the engine area of the Jeep. When I first start the Jeep, the noise is not present, but it always starts after I have been driving for about 5 minutes. The noise is worst at idle or when I let off of the gas when coasting or shifting. When I accelerate, the whine is still present, but it diminishes noticably and almost goes away. The noise is present in all gears of the transmission. The Jeep has an aftermarket Mopar fuel injection kit installed. Any info or assistance in isolating the source of the noice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Check the water pump or the alternator. More than likely it is the water pump, the bearings will expand more than the housing and if it is old enough all of the grease will have dried, causing the screeching noise when the engine reaches operating temperature. Does it overheat or run abnormally hot? If it happens to be the alternator the voltage regulator is probably the culprit.

Thanks for the reply and suggestion. I was also thinking the water pump, and that was second on my list to check. I actually checked out the intake and exhaust manifolds (thanks to some other Jeepers and their posts elsewhere) and noticed that both were a little loose. After tightening them both down, the noise has not returned. Hopefully that was it, but I will be investigating the water pump soon just to make sure. Thanks again.
