Power steering

My wife has a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo and it just started making a groaning type of noise, but only when turning the steering wheel to the left! I checked the power steering fluid level which was a little low and refilled it but the noise still persist. Whats going on?And can I fix it myself, without going to a mechanic?
