Sounds a bit like universal joints to me. You can get a set of replacements at the dealer or at an auto parts store.
If you are prepaired to do the work yourself, be sure to get yourself a repair book for your model at the auto parts store. You will need the guidance offered in the book, especially if it your first time doing U-joints.
Always, be sure to follow the recomendations of marking the drive shaft in relation to the yolk on the rear axel. If you put it on the wrong way around, you will end up with a vibration.
This will be your first step in eliminating the popping sound. It is a fairly simple, inepensive repair that should probably be done anyhow because of how many miles are on the vehicle.
If you do this repair, or have it done for you, please post your results here.
If it does not stop the popping noise, their are a few other ideas I have, but they are pretty involved and quite messy.
