I recently had my car in for repair for the wipers. When I got my car back, the radio display light is no longer working. When I asked the mechanic, he told me that it was "just a coincidence" and "these things happen". As you can imagine, I was not happy about his answer but what could I do. They told me I would need to replace the entire stereo unit. Is this true? The stereo/radio/CD player still work, but I can't see anything. I can't tell what radio station I'm on, can't see the time, can't see which disc or track I'm on, very frustrating.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

It sounds like the fuse #30 - 10 amp is out. Here is a guide to help you check it and the location of the fuse with the radio wiring diagrams so you can see how then system works.

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what you find.

Cheers

It did work for some of the users, others had to install a new radio.

The radio and CD player work fine, I just do not have a display on the radio, so I cannot see the clock or anything else. The fuse was okay.

Bummer, it sounds like the radio is no good and needs to be replaced I suggest an aftermarket radio. Here is a video of one being installed in a similar vehicle:

I just ran into this problem on a Jeep I just purchased. You'll notice the lights in the buttons all function. Those lights are powered by the same fuse that powers the display. I have seen my display come on intermittently sometimes for short periods and sometimes just flashing once or twice. As a bench repair technician this suggests to me that there's a bad solder joint on the main power supply or main ground to the display inside the radio. I'm actually getting ready to pull it apart in the next day or so to see how difficult it will be to get to the connection. I'm hoping we're dealing with a ribbon or similar such Connection in one easily accessible area. Solder joints are a major cause of faults on Modern electronic equipment.

I disassembled the front end of the radio which actually was a lot easier than I thought it would be. The display panel is a self-contained unit that plugs in on the front side of the rest of the radio and has three grounding solder joints that have to be unsoldered to be removed. This circuit board includes all of the controls except for the power and volume control. I resoldered all the obvious connections, though none looked suspicious. Unfortunately that did not help. I'm still convinced that we're dealing with a bad solder joint but now believe that it is either in the LED display unit itself or on the main circuit board of the radio. And since this problem does extend across several models that appear to use the same display I am leaning towards the actual LED display itself. Either repair will be extensive. I have purchased a new radio. But I am going to disassemble this radio a little more and see if I can find the actual culprit.

Nice, let me know what you find. It could be a bad IC that is causing it.

Thanks for the reminder. I am considering that but I can say that it is not the solder joints on the one I see on that circuit board. Interestingly, yesterday the display came on first thing in the morning and stayed on the longest it's been on since I owned the vehicle. So the IC is a good possibility but I still think a bad solder joint inside the LED display itself is the culprit. As soon as I get my new radio I'm going to pull this one apart and try to open that display and see what I can see. I have no way to test the IC.

Okay. I pulled the display board off the radio again and pulled the protective metal from around the LCD. That was as far as I could go without destroying the LCD unit itself. It is a sealed unit. I do notice that there is some discoloration in the area of the screen on the clear plastic near the point where the power enters the unit. I believe that's caused by heat from a bad solder joint but I'm unable to prove it without destroying the display. Since I am unable to positively identify the flaw making this a repair that the average user is not going to be able to perform, I believe the most cost-effective remedy is replacing the radio. Since I found one that looks exactly like the one that failed for just over $100 and actually has an auxiliary input that I did not have on the original radio, I believe replacement is the way to go. I found out the company I purchased the radio from is only about 10 miles from me and while talking to one of their customer agents, determined they will repair my original radio for about the same price as the replacement. The warranty on the replacement makes the purchase of that unit a better deal.

We cleaned the battery terminals, now my radio does not work. I changed the fuse under the steering wheel area, but still does not work. It has no code, no power to radio what so ever. All other stuff works fine.

Yes I've tried pushing the on button, several times as a matter of fact, but still nothing. This all started after replacing the battery. Is there some wire under the hood that might of became loose while switching the battery? Thanks for the reply, it actually brought out a giggle over the whole mess with the radio. Lol

. Could it be, SENSITIVE electronic device that was affected by SPURTS of power during BATT change-out. FIX might be, let's say, POSITIVE side of BATT disconnected for 1? Minute, then reconnect

Yes, pushing right buttons. Not after market. Going to try your suggestion on unhooking the positive battery cable. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Thanks again
