As you probably know, in the '95 XJR (also XJ8--basically X300), the gear shift lever has a bank of switches attached--the Neutral Safety Switch. If the switch for the park (P) or neutral (N) position is out of adjustment or fails, you can not start the car.

Recently, I have had to jiggle the gear shifter a bit before the car will start. Aha. Today, the car will not start at all. Battery is fine--new and full CCA. Starter is fine.

This suggests that the shifter cable needs to be adjusted so that the Neutral Safety Switch will engage

My question:

1) How do I do this? I think that the cable is located right under the shifter, in the center console--but am not sure how to get to the shifter cable.

Can you please tell me:

How to remove the console and find to the shifter cable and how to then adjust it so I can start the car?

Thanks!
