1986 Jaguar XJ6 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Car barely idles and stalls when excellorated. Some times won't even idle. I changed the fuel pump and filter. Plenty of gas at the pump. No power at the + side of pump. I changed the fuel pump relay located on the firewall. Still no power at the pump. My manuel talks about an Inertia fuel cut-off switch. Could this cause my problems. Local stores don't carry this part. I'll order if this will work. Any ideas?
Thanks, vern

Hello .. thanks for the donation .. much appreciated ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP The electric fuel pump provides fuel under pressure to the fuel pressure regulator. Power for operation during cranking mode is provided from starter relay via the diode unit. After the engine has started, control of the fuel pump is by a fuel pump circuit in the airflow meter. The first movement of airflow meter air measuring flap (about 5 °) closes the fuel pump contacts and provides power to fuel pump after engine has started. With engine stopped, no airflow is present, measuring flap closes and fuel pump contacts are opened to cut power to fuel pump. This method of circuitry reduces the risk of fire in a collision. The fuel pump is a sealed unit; no service required. Fuel Cut-Off Switch...At right door pillar. See Fig. 19 .

The inertia fuel cut off switch is located on right door pillar At the fuel pump relay socket check for power at the white wire if nothing there unplug the inertia switch and jumper it if white wire has power now on the fuel pump relay socket replace the inertia switch If there's no power going into the inertia switch you have an open circuit from there to the ignition switch.

I can't locate the Inertia switch. I don't see anything that looks like the picture. My car is a series 3. Once I locate the switch can I bypass it?
Thanks, Vern

I found the switch. It is located on the pass. side pillar post (interior) next to the fascia panel. Easy to miss. Can I bypass? The part is $100 and I would have to order it. I have a rquest online for a used part, nothing yet. I hope this is my problem.
Thanks, Vern

I jumped the inercia relay. No change. Starts, runs very rough, can't accelerate and stalls. Back to basics. Any ideas? My wife pulled it into the garage with no problem. The next day she went to start it and wow. What could have happened?
Thanks, Vern

The pump is not running with the key on run. I may have changed the wrong relay for the fuel pump. There are 2 relays on the fire wall. I changed al 3 relays on the firewall(used) with no change. The fuel pump is not coming on.
Thanks for your patience, Vern

It fires up when it hit the sweet spot Sounds like the ignition switch is failing

Can I confirm this to be the problem? I already have changed the fuel pump, fuel filter, 2 relays and the inertia switch. I'm tired of going fishing.
Thanks Vern

Okay I want you to power up the inertia switch the way you did the fuel pump at the white wire both side of the inertia switch make sure the ignition switch is off.

Leave the jumper wire at the inertia switch

At the fuel pump relay socket check for power at the white wire and also at the white and orange wire do you have power

When you tun key to run you should have power on both side of the inertia switch if its not tripped. No power at all it points back to the ignition switch

You go 13ohms that means the wire is not open and you're not getting power both side of the inertia switch. Replace the ignition switch.

It took over a week to get an ignition switch. I just put it in and nothing. No change. Will only run for a few seconds and then stall. Fuel pump is not coming on with the ignition switch. Any more ideas?
Thanks, Vern

I blocked the flap partially open with a screw driver and started the car. Idled perfectly, would accelerate slowly. Bingo, I think we hit a homer. I'll try to find an air flow meter.

Installed air flow meter and she took right off. The car was not getting any air apparently. This should have been checked before. My grandfather once told me that Lucas almost cost the British the war. It had over half its planes grounded for electrical reasons.
Many Thanks, Vern

To whom it may concern, check the Mass air flow sensor, it's the silver box between the air filter and the throttle body. Take the black cover off and crank the engine watch the needle, see if the car try to start as the needle moves. Get your wife to try starting the car as you hold the needle open just a little. let me know what the outcome was. I think you have a bad Mass air flow sensor. Also make sure the inerit swithc for the fuel cut off is in the down position... this is the switch you had throuble finding in the interior. Get back to me and let me know the outcome.
