J Gate reverse issue

When shifting into drive as I'm passing the reverse position the red light illuminates and then goes off as I go into drive, then my reverse lights stay on. If I put into neutral and restart car and go into drive, I'm fine but no lights on Jgate except if I stay on reverse. Any help please?

Just to confirm what is happening, when this issue happens does the vehicle actually go into drive?

Meaning, does the vehicle actually have a driving issue or is just the lighting/illumination issue?

If this is just a lighting issue, then I suspect the gear select module is the issue because this is basically just a set of resistors that when you move the selector it runs voltage through a different set of resistors.

So, to check this we need to use a scan tool that is cable of monitor the gear selection and see if this matches the lights.

If we can confirm this, then I would suggest replacing this module.

We are not able to just check the resistance coming out of it because it is sent via the communication network.

So, while doing this we should also check for codes and make sure there isn't any that points us in a different direction.

Please run through this and let us know what you find.

Thanks

Code P0706 comes up, car goes into a limp mode but drives good. No shifting issues. When starting vehicle lights are off jgate, but passing through R it lights up but when put into D it goes off and reverse lights are stuck on. The vehicle last night somehow cleared all codes and lights light on P was lit up while I was parked and then went away briefly.

Okay. Here we go, I dismantled jgate and shifted to 4th a little above it and fault went away, then when I shift back toward P it comes back, is this rotary adjustment needed?

Thank you for your time. By the way, I am showing dash with cleared transmission fault code because it's in 1 or 2nd doesn't matter or even D and code will clear, but once it hits the N or P it defaults again. I hope this helps me, lol.

Yep. That code is for the transmission range switch but on this vehicle that is the rotary switch.

There is no adjustment in the manual for this so that means it needs to be replaced.

This is a Jag so there is a chance that the manual just doesn't have an adjustment process as that is typical of these types of vehicles but if it were me, I would replace it.

Normally these have an alignment tool but again, I don't show one.
