Before this actually happens, does it run normally? I ask because it could be related to fuel pressure or a failing crankshaft position sensor. Either of those may or may not set the check engine light.

Also, if you feel that doesn't seem to mirror what you experience, the next thing I would recommend checking is fuel pressure. Here is a link that explains how it is done. You will need a fuel pressure gauge, but if you don't have one, most parts stores will lend one to you.

Let me know your thoughts or anything additional you can think of. For example, is there any smoke from the exhaust or odd odors?
