I have a 2000 Ford ranger. Went to start it up today. Clicked once then the key just smoothly turned. No other clicks. Wouldn't start. The dash lights came on and so did the radio. Tried to turn it off to try again. Turned the key all the way back. Key still turned smoothly. No clicks. The radio still on and the dash still on. Others had told me I needed a new ignition switch and that I'd also have to have the vehicle flashed because my key has a chip in it. Not sure what that means. Any ideas of what it'd be would help a lot.

The ignition key and lock is in the top of the column, the electrical part of the ignition switch is mounted further down the column. There is a sliding piece of linkage with rack type gears on it that connects the two. This linkage is made of pot metal and breaks often. The symptom is that is can push the ignition switch on but cannot pull it back to turn it off. If you get under the dash you can see the actual switch and should be able to manually pull the linkage back to shut it off. Replacing the broken part requires disassembling a lot of the column so it/s not an easy job. You have to get the part from the dealer.
I thinks it# 52 in the picture.
