I read on the Microsoft Edge Homepage that I should change the generator and water pump every 100,000 miles to avoid damage to the engine.

A while ago an article popped up on my Microsoft Edge Homepage that said that the generator and water pump should be changed every 100,000 miles to avoid damage to the engine and to the fuel system, is this true? I still have the original generator and the original water pump on this import vehicle while in the long ago past when I was driving domestic vehicles their water pumps sprang a leak and their generators were discharging long before reaching 100,000 miles, should I be replacing the generator and water pump every 100,000 miles as preventive maintenance? I say generator instead of alternator because the last time I posted here your mechanic Caradiodoc told me that Chrysler invented the AC generator in 1960 and called it an alternator and copyrighted the term alternator and when Ford and GM also adopted the alternator they still called it the generator to avoid copyright infringement and so I don't want to infringe on Chrysler's copyrighted term, than you very much for informing me about the necessity of this alleged maintenance.

Hi,

The term Alternator is universal. No problem whatsoever using it.

As far as the alternator or the water pump, if the coolant drains and the engine overheats, that can damage the engine, but if it isn't leaking and there are no issues, it doesn't need replaced. Also, maybe the alert you got was referring to engines having a timing belt and not a chain.

Your engine has a timing chain that should last the life of the vehicle. A belt, on the other hand, usually comes a recommendation for replacement at 100K. Since many newer vehicles have a belt, often the timing belt runs the water pump, but that isn't the case with your vehicle.

As far as the alternator is concerned, no, don't replace it until it needs to be replaced. If it starts to fail, you will know because the battery will drain.

I hope this made sense. LOL In seven words, I could have answered. Don't fix it if it isn't broken.

Let me know if you have questions or if I can help in any way.

Take care,

joe

Thank you Joe, you are a very good mechanic and also you are a very good father to your two sons Jacob and Nicholas, I wish my father was a mechanic because when last decade or maybe the decade before the last we had a 2000 Kia Sephia with a thermostat that was sticking in the closed position and my father to save a little bit of labor charges he replaced the thermostat himself and he didn't install the thermostat housing gasket and when it was leaking he got enraged at the Advance Auto Parts store salesmen allegedly because they told him so what when he complained about the leaking thermostat housing, I wish he was a mechanic like you guys and I am glad Joe that in your Homestate of Pennsylvania the temperatures finally got above zero Celsius or 32 Fahrenheit. Take care Joe and keep up the good work of being a good mechanic and a good father.
