2003 Hyundai Santa Fe Irratic Idle

Just replaced a worn out engine with a used engine with 72,000 miles. Checked timing belt and set cam sprockets and crank pulley to correct markings. Engine idles up and down and wants to die. Also hear a high pitch sound coming from right front of engine, but goes away with higher RPM. Checked serpentine belt and pulleys and they are fine. Have engine code P0118 (engine coolant circuit high input). Need to know what the possible problem(s) could be to fix this. Thank you. Tim

Is the engine from the same year make and model? Also, your code basically indicates there is a problem with the temp sensor. That could be causing the fuel mixture to go rich, lean, rich. As a result, the idle could change. Have you checked for vacuum leaks? Finally, did you replace the sensors in the new engine?

Hi Joe, The engine is out of a 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe 2.7 litre. I have not replaced any sensors and I dont know where to begin with vaccum leaks. Please advise what to begin with. Thanks, Tim

Based on the code, I would recommend starting with the temp sensor. If the one from the new engine hasn't been changed, it may be giving the computer an incorrect reading.
