My grandmother's car has 47,000 miles on it. The engine light was on and it was running rough so I brought it to an Auto Zone and had the code read from the reader. Sure enough, it said the #4 spark plug wasn't firing correctly. So I bought some new plug wires and installed them. When I removed the #4 wire from the plug it looked all rusty in the plug tube, so I pulled the plug and it was very rusty as well. I replaced all plugs and all wires, and sprayed a little WD-40 down the tube to try and stay the rust. But, when I started it up I had the same problem. #4 plug not firing correctly. I'm thinking that the rust may have prevented proper grounding of the plug, and that improper grounding may have damaged the module that provides spark to the #4, what do you think?

How long has the car been misfiring for? I would pull the ignition wire and hold the end of it to a good groung on the motor and see if your getting any spark whatsoever. If your not replace the ignition coil, if you are getting good spark there might be a problem elsewhere, valves, injector etc. Let me now how you make out

One other thing I forgot, clean out that wd40 as it can be conductive and also cause a misfire, always use dielectric greese when lubing anything to do with electric as its not conductive.

It turns out that the car had a leaking intake manifold gasket. Who knew it would cause all that? The coils were all fine. Strange.
