Check for any codes in the computer is the first thing I would do. IT may or may not give us a clue to start with.
The 2.4 motor did have a problem with crank sensors. More typically after a timing belt failure. The pattern of the signal it puts out can be checked with a quality scanner.
Also I would try unplugging the egr valve connector ans see if it changes the condition. There is a tsb on this one if I remember right. If it does change the idle prob, then replace the egr valve.
Do the same on the MAF sensor if it still exists.
