What's harder on the car: using your brakes to slow a car down while driving down a long steep hill or putting it in low gear?

putting it in a lower gear is the best thing to do on the engine, brakes will heat up over time, and that will cause the vheicle to want to not stop as efficently anymore, causing the brake fluid to possibly boil, then you loose brake control.
