Noises problem
1999 Hyundai Atos 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 55K miles

new belts (3) fitted at 55Kmileage by Hyundai agent returned car to me low frequency noise from the belt drive area. Have disconnected steering and AC pump but no cure. Water pump and alternator appear to be ok. At tickover no vibration through steering wheel but persistent low frequency noise.
Have reason to believe new belts may not be for this model?Could this be the cause of this noise or is it just a poorly done job. Do you have any idea what can be wrong.

Were the belts making noise prior to the repair? Also, does the sound change with engine RPM? Can you describe the sound?

Let me know.

Hi jacobandnickolas, thanks for your reply. Car ran as sweet as anything before Hyundaii garage got their hands on it. It's a sort of grating sound - opinions I have had so far is that it is either the water pump or alternator which could have been damaged when all the belts were changed.

Usually the water pump will end up leaking if it bearing and seal go bad. Have you had any coolant leaks or have you added coolant? Also, can you remove the belt that is running the pump and alt to see if the sound stops? If you do, DO NOT run the car for more than about 10 seconds because it will over heat very quickly. But that is one way to determine if the sound is coming from one of them.

Let me know what you find.
