Hi,

I had a strange problem. My car would start squealing after I had driven it for 10 miles or so. I took it to a local MIDAS and they changed the A/C belt but the sound didn't go. I again took it back to them and they said they need to replace the whole A/C compressor with clutch which will cost $750. They said that the compressor was stretching the belt which then began squealing. I am a student and I didn't have that much money so as a temporary solution they cut the A/C cable. The squealing sound disappeared.

I am not sure if there recommendation was correct since my A/C is working well and cools the car quickly and efficiently. Was the mechanic taking me for a ride or do I need to burn $750.

Please help.

What do you mean by them cutting the AC cable?

They removed the belt that ran the AC so that the compressor didn't run with engine and hence didn't make that sound.

If you can live without the AC, I wouldn't worry about it. But if you have to have the AC, you can probably find a used compressor for cheaper (slightly) and have it installed.
