Hello, I recently went for an emissions test and failed because my "Onboard Diagnostic" was not able to communicate with their system. Their is no check engine light on the dashboard but recently replaced my alternator & battery. The state said that my computer needs to be reset, how can I do that without spending a fortune? Is their a way I can reset this thing with the push of a button?

Hi Mitchem234,

After removal of battery, the stored values in the ECM has been reset to factory settings. The ECM needs to relearn so all you have to do is drive the car around and it should set itself ready for the diagnostic equipment. You might need to drive around for more than 100 miles before it is ready.

KHLow2008,
After replacing the battery & alternator 2 months ago I have driven the car multiple times in excess of 100 miles and the ECM hasn't reset, so far. Maybe i'll disconnect the battery and try to reset by driving again.

Hi Mitchem234,

I guess that is the best way.

One tip that might help.

After disconnecting and reconnecting the battery terminals, restart engine and don't drive the car first.

Leave all electrical components off. Let engine run till cooling fans starts and stop at least twice, switch on AC and let it run for 5 more minutes.

Turn off engine and restart.

You are ready to start driving.
