Car has a loud humming noise at very low speed on driver side I believe from the rear depending on type of road it hums less at higher speed. Please advise, at low speed it almost sounds like the tire has a bulge, but tires are not very old. Thanks for your help.

You say it sounds like a tire bulge, My wife had tires put on her Firebird, it sat around 6 months without moving, We took the car for a ride and it felt like a flat tire, came to find out that the tires had sat around the warehouse. The rubber tread separated from the casing. Jack the tires up one at a time and while turning it by hand feel to see if there is a bulge, check all the tires one at a time. Here is a guide to when the tires were made.

When you see a DOT code on a tire, it indicates when the tire was manufactured. The first two numbers after the DOT represent the week of production, and the last two numbers represent the year. For example, if you see a DOT code that reads “DOT 3104, ” this means that the tire was manufactured during week 31 of 2020.

Checked all tires for play and noise but they are okay. Now I'm thinking the plastic covering underneath is making the noise, trying to eliminate it when the wife is not driving it.

Sorry I haven't replied back. I still have the white elephant, technician from a local dealership rotated the tires, checked the bearings, all fine noise is on low speed and high speed over 62 MPH. I did find a hole in the wheel well cover (baseball size) would the air rushing through there be to blame? I put some duct tape on it when the wife took it to work but when she got back it was gone and it probably got knocked out when accelerating to highway speeds. Anymore suggestions I welcome them.

Hi,

Is the sound loud enough to record and upload for us to hear? I guess if there is a hole in the fender liner, it could vibrate, but why only at low and high speeds and not at normal speeds? That is what is confusing me.

If you can, record it and upload it. It may help us.

Take care,

Joe

Also, the front driver side tire had a nail and screw so I took to repair shop and the guy said the tire is cupped on the inside and it might be all four. Also, the car shakes when coming off highway and applying brakes, steering wheel side to side like warped rotors, guy said struts or alignment cause that.

Hi,

As far as the shaking when you apply the brakes, that is likely the brake rotors. Cupped tires can certainly cause a humming. I know I need to rotate my own tires because they are cupped and driving me crazy. LOL

If the tires are in good condition other than the cupping, rotate them to see if the sound moves to the rear.

Also, I'm not sure what you attached above. I see pics of a phone. What am I missing?

Let me know.

I got the car aligned and replaced the front tires and noise is gone, car has 130,000 miles and the technician said the struts and bearings are still okay. Should I replace the struts? The alignment was pretty bad.

Hi,

First, I'm glad the noise is gone. It sounds like the tires were cupped which can cause that type of noise. I rotated mine today and the only thing that happened was the noise moved to the rear. LOL

As far as the struts are concerned, a long time ago my first shop teacher said very sternly, "If it's not broken, don't fix it." LOL I have lived with that philosophy all my life. If they said they are still good, I wouldn't replace them. Get your money's worth out of them. For a shop to tell you they are still good, they must be. Otherwise, they would have tried to sell you new ones.

Regardless, I'm glad to know the problem has been resolved. I appreciate your letting me know. Also, your post will likely help others in the future.

Take good care of yourself and feel free to come back anytime in the future. You are always welcome.

Thanks Joe, this site is incredible with my cars aging and the new cars out of reach for us on Social Security we have to find ways to stretch our dollars by repairing instead of buying. So, I for sure will seek your expertise when I need it. Thanks again everybody that helped.

You are very welcome, and I totally understand. I have to keep my older vehicles going as well. I work two jobs and still can't afford a new one. LOL, I have no idea how others are doing it other than taking out what I consider a mortgage. LOL

Take care of yourself. Although I hope you don't have more problems, I hope to see you again.
