Hey guys,

I just bought this vehicle. I have a thirty day warranty engine and transmission.

I found out today when I turn fully right, the steering wheel is making a clacking noise. It doesn't make a noise if I do not fully turn my wheel to the right.

The dealership said they will not cover this because it is not an engine/transmission issue.

The mechanic told me it'd cost about $700.00 or so but the mechanic did say it is not dangerous? It is just wear and tear? Is this true? Should I replace it or this can wait?

I have been a suspension and alignment specialist for over twenty five years, but I have never heard a steering gear make the kind of noise you described. Does it occur only while you are turning the steering wheel fully to the right, or does the noise continue as long as you hold it there? Can you hear it from under the hood while a helper turns the steering wheel?

Maybe I did not explain it right. The sound is like a metal snapping? Clanking? When I turn the steering wheel all the way to the right.

It does not make any noise when I hold it there. It also does not make any noise when I make slight right turn or driving.

I have a suspicion you are hearing a binding upper strut mount. You should be able to hear that while standing next to a front tire. Reach over the top of a front tire, wrap your fingertips around the coil spring, then have your helper turn the steering wheel. The spring should rotate smoothly with the wheel. If the mount is binding, you will feel the spring wind up, then snap free, or you will feel some roughness as it turns.
