1999 Honda Prelude SH 85000 mi. EGR Problem

Was alerted to an EGR problem by the engine light and corresponding fault code which I downloaded.

I have tried the following cures recommended by the service manual with no success.

1) Removed, cleaned, and re-installed the EGR valve with a new gasket. Cleared the fault register but the error came back again after several minutes of driving.

2) Removed and tested the EGR valve to find that it was faulty (failed resistance test). Replaced the valve with a new one but again the error came back after several minutes of driving (it took longer this time for the error to return- 20-30 minutes).

3) Removed the new valve and tested it. Found that the new valve failed the resistance test.

4) Performed a vacuum test on the valve and the surrounding vacuum lines. All were ok.

Any help would be appreciated.

When you apply the valve with engine at idle what does it do?, Should stumble hard if not die. If you apply EGR and little or no change in the way it is running, then the EGR passages need to be cleaned out.

I performed the idle EGR valve test originally to verify the vacuum lines. While the car did respond, it did not stumble very hard and was nowhere near dying.

I have read accounts of people cleaning out their EGR passages on their own. Is this a reasonably easy task?

Thanks for your help Jack.

The passages are all a little different, depends on what needs to be done to clean it, sometimes requires the removal of some parts, If you are up to it I say, go for it
