2002 Honda CRV Cooling

I have a Honda CRV EX 2.4 engine with 73000 miles and it is having cooling problems, when i removed the radiator cap there was a gray paste substance built up on the around the edge and on the cap.

First thing I would suggest is to replace the thermostat, but then again you haven't done much to explain the problem.
