Engine Cooling problem
1996 Honda Odyssey 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

Odyssey fan problem: Car overheated and blew upper radiator hose. I cleaned things up and easily fixed the hose, but the car still gets hot. Turns out that the fan works fine, but only when the ignition is turned off; when the engine cools enough, the fan shuts off as it should. However, when the engine is still hot, as soon as the key is turned to the "on" position, the fan turns off. I could imagine any number of causes, but thought you might have some experience to narrow the choices. Any ideas?

Many thanks!

Well, this has been an interesting new experience for me. I posted the initial question and a week later still no response.

I did discover the problem in the meantime. So, for anyone who has a similar problem in the future, here it is: I bought the upper radiator hose from Kragen!

They insisted that it was the right one, even though it was longer and protruded up to the bottom of the closed hood. Being a bit naive, I figured that if it fit, it would work. But when I opened the bleed valve after filling the radiator, nothing came out. I ended up taking the car in to a local shop and they diagnosed an air bubble caused by the longer hose which stuck up above the radiator. Replaced the hose with the correct one and it works fine. Of course, I am upset at having to pay so much money to the shop for diagnosing and changing the hose--$90 plus parts--just because Kragen sold me a hose which didn't work, and because I didn't know better. An expensive lesson, but one which I will not forget!
