Decreasing tap/knocking noise after turning off ignition

When I turn off the ignation there is a noise from under the front end that spaces out and fades. It's much louder than the normal cooling down sounds of the engine, but sounds like that. Happens every time of late. I know I have a loose heat shield because it rattles on quick acceleration. It's disquietingly loud. Any ideas?

It has to be normal heat related. The only thing that runs after the engine is shut off is the fan on the radiator. I doubt that is it. The shield however is loose wear? If it is the heat shield close to the converter or around it, the shield could actually be touching the exhaust and thus taking on a great deal more heat than it is used to. Address the shield and your troubles will likely go away.
