I just bought a used 2003 Civic coupe. It has around 103 k miles on it. I brought it into the shop to be looked at. They had told me my Cadiladic converter needs to be replaced. What is that? How soon should it be replaced? It is going to cost $1171.00 to fix. Can not getting it replaced ASAP cause more damage to the car?

The item they are talking about replacing is the catalytic converter. It is located on the exhaust and is a big cleaner of the emissions. Hard to believe that it went out already. What is the car doing that led you to ask that question?

It has been wrecked which could have caused damage to the converter. I had taken it in to be looked at b/c my check engine light was on. They had told me it was the only thing that was wrong with the car. Everything else is fine. I dont know how important it is to the car. If it is going to cause more damage in the long run I am going to take money out of savings and fix it now. I am just trying to figure out wether it will cause more damage to the care if I dot get it fixed ASAP.

I guess I would say no it should not, but you haven't described how the car is running.

The car runs great. I bought it five hours away from where I live and drove it back with no problems.

Is the check engine light still on? Did they clear it and it came back? What was the code?
