2001 Honda Civic 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 100k miles

Hello to all, I have a 2001 honda civic, 4 door, lx. This car use to be immaculate with fuel consumption! Now something is wrong and I cant figure it out. It seems that the gas needle is wrong, the needle fluctuates. For example, if its on half a tank, I drive a couple of miles, stop and turn off the car and the needle goes down a quarter, then picks up again. I have tried the following: tune up, oil change, aired tires, gentle driving, synthetic oil, gas additive. I took it to honda and they "claimed that they checked the speedometer cluster and it was good. They claimed it was the send receive unit, which is attached to the gas pump/filter, of course honda was gonna charge an arm and a leg so I bought a used/tested fuel pump/filter send recieve unit and installed it. Problem is still there! Help! I own this car and this gas issue really bugs me and is pushing me to trade in and buy another car, but I cant afford that route

Hi casualvic,

If the gauge is fluctuating with needle moving rather fast, the gauge itself is faulty. This gauges is designed in way that the needle would not be sensitive and would not fluctuate.

The other thing that you should check would be the groundings at front inner fender behind the headlights. Bad grounds would cause inaccurate gauge reading. Remove and clean before tightening the grounds.

Thanks for response and apology for my delayed response. When I mentioned the gas gauge fluctuating, this is what I meant: the fuel reads half a tank, I drive five miles (to store) then when I get on my way again it will read a quarter lower than half. Then the next day I go to work and when I get there (3 miles) I notice the needle is now just a little bit under half. And then sometimes that doesnt happen! Please let me know if I can get the needle fixed, or have to buy the whole spedometer. Also, were are does gounds your talking about. Thank you very much!

If the gauge is faulty, it has to be replaced as an assy. You should be able to get the part from the scrap yard but a different meter cluster means youneed to recalibrate the speedometer to match the present one or you can cannibalise and swap the speedometer.

The grounds that I mentioned are the grounding point for the meter circuit. It is located behind the fron headlights on the inner fender. Remove and clean them with some sandpapaerr and retighten to check if the meter works.

However the symptoms mentioned could be normal as the meter is nmot 100 % accurate when in operation. You mentioned excessive fuel consumption, that has nothing to do with the fuel gauge.
