Engine Mechanical problem
1998 Honda Civic 105000 miles

I recently had my timing belt changed on my honda civic. They also replaced the H20 pump, tensioner, cam seal, and crank seal on June 6th. The day I picked up the car it was making a horrible noise when I would apply the gas. I had to take it back that same day and the mechanic said he forgot to reset the timing. It ran better however in 4th and 5th gear I still heard the same noise when applying the gas. Now (end of July) my check engine light has come on. I took it into the shop and complained that the car hasn't run well since they replaced the timing belt. They diagnosed the problem as a crank speed sensor and they replaced it for free. Friday night while driving it the check engine light came on again. Today (Monday) the shop says it is a camshaft timing sensor and that I may need a new distributer. Is it feasible that these current issues are a direct result of the new timing belt not being right? I am not replacing the distributor until a different shop looks at it. I would like to know if the "sensor" issues could be due to the mechanic improperly installing and/or setting the timing belt.

Hi bgsnapdragon,

Yes, if the valve timing has been set out of sync when replacing the timing belt, it would cause knocking noise during acceleration and sensors to record errors.

Do a ignition timing check with a timing light and if the timing is way off, then you need to recheck the timing belt installatiion.
