1998 Honda Civic Power Steering Problem

Hello,

It takes a considerable effort to turn the wheel at parking lot speeds and when I am parrallel parking, as if there is no power steering assist. During cold starts, I would hear a high pitch whining coming potentially from the p/s pump area.

The P/S fiuld has been flushed and the P/S belt tension appears to be good. The tire pressure and alignment is fine. I took it to the dealer, but they couldn't find the problem.

I'm not sure where to start the diagnosis?

When you increase the rpm does the steering improve? I suspect that the pump is failing.

The steering effort does not change with rpm. Is there anyway to perform a p/s pump test?

I want to be sure it's the pump and not the p/s rack.
Thanks.

I hope oem honda p/s fluid was used. If so i'd suspect the pump, as they are much more common. Get a pressure check done to be sure though.

And if oem honda fluid wasn't used, be prepared to replace everything.
