I have a 98 civic. The car will will act like the trans is slipping going down the interstate but I noticed that the tac actually drops to 0 then the car catches and jerks like the trans is grabbing. It does not do this often enough for me to guess. I drive to school 4 hours and don't want to get stranded.

Hi 98civic gremlin,

Symptoms indicates possibly the engine is stalling before catching. Does this occur at running speeds of more than 50 mph?

Does the dash indicator lights showed momentarily when this occurred?

What is the idling rpm when vehicle is stopped?

It does anywhere after 40. There are no lights coming on when it happens. The idle speed in gear is 750 and 1000 in park. The car did die this morning sitting in driveway but started right up. Drove today and no problem.

When stalling occurs while cruising, it usually is due to power suppply interruption and and quite often it is an indication the ignition switch is failing.

I would advise checking the ignition switch.
