Engine Mechanical problem
1994 Honda Civic 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 160k miles

Driving from NYC to Rochester yesterday my civic started to hesitate (actually seemed as if engine was shutting down and sometimes did stall) when pulling away from stop. Ran okay on highway, but when I put foot down to pick up speed on highway, engine sputtered and seemed like it would die if I didn't take foot of gas this happens when accelerating to highway speeds or when going from 55-60 mph if I press gas down past a certain point.

When I shut it off, it won't start again right away, but seems okay after it sits for a while. I replaced the fuel filter under the hood at a highway stop, but this didn't fix the problem.

I guess maybe fuel pump? Is it difficult to replace? Or maybe ignition coil? Please help

Hi geojb,

Fuel pump and ignition coil are possible causes for the symptoms described. However there are other items that can cause the problem as well.

When Engine could not start, did you test if sparks were available and bright? Did you test if fuel pressure was available?

If it is ignition problem, the ignition coil would be the primary suspect.

If it is fuel problem, it could be the PGM-FI main relay. It controls the fuel pump. Remove it to check the circuit board for cold solders (bad or cracked) at some of the main contacts at both ends. Resolder them if possible and retest.
