Make/Model/Engine: 1992 Honda Accord EX 2.2L 4cyl

The flex pipe section between the engine and catalytic converter has a hole in it. I replaced the same part 4 years/20K miles ago. Anyways, I just asked a mech how much it would be to replace and they said $600. I found the exact part online for $100. I have some general car knowledge and do some work on my car, so I'm wondering how difficult replacing that part is. Also, is there any other temporary solution to the problem? The hole is just in the flexible/weaved part near the cat converter and just on one side of the pipe. The rest of the assembly looks fine.

If you found a preformed complete direct fit pipe for a honda. Watch out! Somethings wrong. You may have found just the flex for that money. If it is just the flex, it has to be welded in!

That's what I needed to know. Thank you! It was actually the entire thing that I found, not just the flexible part. I haven't been able to find just that flexible part alone yet. Is there anywhere I should start looking? And is there anything I can do to temporarily shut the car up and stop it from emitting the strange smells from that hole?

No on the hole. If you try to weld them they melt away, Flex sections can be bought at better parts stores, and if you go to an exhaust shop, maybe you can get the job done for about half the quote you mentioned, or just a new flex!

Yeah.I tried affixing a piece of galvanized steel on there. All I had lying around =) Needless to say, it didn't last long. There's a lot of vibration and high temperatures associated with that area, I guess. Thanks for the information; you've been very helpful.

Edit: and when I inquired to the mechanic about the flex pipe. It was for the entire thing, not just the flexible section. He didn't actually look at the car.I just asked about it. He said they can sometimes weld a section on for $225. Which is probably what you mentioned; just that flexible section.

Yes but go to an exhaust shop, preferable a cutom shop, they will do it cheaper than that.100.00--150.00

It is actually an exhaust shop. But that's good advice about going to a custom exhaust shop. I'll do that.

One more thing. How bad is that exhaust that may seep through the hole? Is it something I should be extremely worried about? I don't have enough money at the moment to take care of it right now. But I'm going to do it as soon as I can.

I have one more really quick question. Do you think the hole will get bigger and possibly spread to the non-flex part with time?
