When applying the brakes at above 40 mph, the steering wheel shakes and vibrates. While driving there is no vibration or shake and tires show no signs of wear. Braking at higher speeds the vibration and steering wheel shakes is worse. Car has disc brakes and anti-lock brakes

Hello,

It sound like it could be an issue with rotors. They are probably wrapped.

If you have not had the brakes and suspension check in a while, it will be a good idea to do a visual check.
Over time the brakes wear off and the heating and cooling of the rotors will eventually wrapped the rotors. And when you apply the brake you can feel it with a vibration.
Most of the time you can just replace the pads and resurface the rotors and the issue with go away. The rotors can be resurfaced just about any local auto parts store.
If the rotors are below specification then you will have to replace the rotors as well.
