Given the age of the vehicle and then assuming that the cable that connects the gas pedal to the throttle assembly is original, it is possible that the cable is rusty and stiff. You need to look at it and examine the condition of the cable. I would disconnect the cable and test for smooth operation. Then with the cable still disconnected, have someone hold the end and give tension while another pushes on the pedal to see if there is smooth operation. You will probably find that the cable is the problem but don't overlook the actual pedal itself for ftee unrestricted movement.
The last thing you might want to happen is to have the cable break while driving the vehicle.
