My car will shut down while driving, it will restart after sitting for just a few minutes.

How do I find out what I causing the issue. I have been told that can be a problem with the distributor or it can be the ignition switch. I have replaced the distributor cap and rotor.

Replacing the cap and rotor won't do anything if it's caused by the distributor. Typically the whole unit must be replaced.

You find what the fault is by checking for spark and fuel once the vehicle is acting up. So when it does not start, check for spark. If there is no spark, it most likely is the distributor (I would run a diagnostic before replacing the unit though)
