THis car has been sitting for 5yrs and it has 66,000 miles on it. When I started it the light that shows it to be in park was on and the d3 light was lite also. I can shift the gears and the light shifts to the other gears but after around 5 to 10 minutes I can hear a noise sounding like relay contact just clattering under the dash by my left foot. The car after a little while will not shift in any gear unless I take the key out of iqnition and unlock the shifter and put it in neutral to start and then it will change gears. Also when it sits for a while it will start right up and will shift gears. The SRS warning lite is on also. No other check engine lite is on. Could the car think its in d3 and park at the same time? Could it be just relay contacts ond3 lite that needs to be changed out? Thanks Ted

Hi Ted,

Thank you for the donation.

When both indicators are lit, there should be a short circuit in the wiring system and the most likely cause is the shift position console switch. This would cause a malfunction in the trans shifting.

The SRS warning lamp could be another problem not associated with this. You need to retrieve the Diagnostic Trouble Code to find out what is causing it.

1991 Honda accord with 62000 miles It's been sitting for 5yrs. When I started car I noticed the shift light was on in park and d3 was on also.I shifted gears and light went out in park but stayed on in d3 no matter what gear I was in. The other light worked when I went threw the gears. I checked my shift position console switch 12 pin connector by dissconnecting the wires and the 2pin connector also dissconnecting. The light stayed on d3 with all the wires disconnected. Where to go next?

Hi Ted,

The D3 light should be grounded by the Selector switch to illuminate the dash indicator and since you have disconnected the selector switch wire harness and the lamp still shows ;

1. A/T control unit is bad causing the grounding. Unplug the A/T control unit and if lamps goes off, the control unit is bad.
2. A short circuit in the wiring circuit between meter cluster to selector switch or A/T control unit. This would be a job that is not going to be easy to track down.
