High idle at startup?

When I start my car, it idles at 1,800 RPMs for a few minutes before coming down. I don't want to put it in gear as it's not good for the transmission. It eventually gets down to 900 RPMs after driving awhile. I feel I waste gas waiting. It has a minor rough idle which I change air filter, cleaned throttle body and mass air flow sensor neither of which changed the idle. I'm changing plugs next for that issue. So, anything I can do to get idle down quicker? Thanks, Bob

Hi,

Have you checked for engine vacuum leaks? That can cause a rough idle and high or low idle.

Here is a link explaining how it's done:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-use-an-engine-vacuum-gauge

If no leaks are found, I want to reset what is called the keep-alive memory. Disconnect the battery cables and touch them together while a helper depresses the brake pedal. Try this and let me know if it changes anything.

Also, if the check engine light is staying on while the engine is running, have the computer scanned for codes. Most parts stores will do it free of charge.

Let me know what you find.

Take care,

Joe
