07 Tucson. Grinding noise in park and neutral. But goes away in drive or reverse. Also starts when ignition is in run position. Sounds like the starter is engaging when it shouldn't be. Replaced ignition switch but never solved the problem. Any ideas anyone. Thanks!

Check starter relay for staying engaged or being bad then have starter checked as it may be the starter drive isn't going back like it should. also try giving a quick rev in neutral/park see if it goes away. see link.

Yes. Starter is not disengaging. Whatever it is it keeps burning up the starters.I tried another ignition switch but never solved anything. Ill try the relay. Thanks!

Replaced starter and ignition switch but never solved anything. Never had a chance to check relay in the fuse box yet. That's my next move. Anything else this could be?

Whatever it is it's sending power to the starter when the ignition is in the run position when it shouldn't be. Is there a diagram on how to check the switch with a meter. Thanks!

See pics if lwht wire is sending power to relay and pink is not sending to trans switch then the trans switch may be the culprit. Dual arrows on one pic go from relay to starter. One arrow on same pic comes from trans switch.

Working today but be trying it tomorrow. Any chance that it could be the flywheel?

If it were the flywheel you sold eat starters very quickly I tmay be the torque converter bolts are loose but that would stop when it was in drive.

Noise is not there in drive or reverse. But I can't see flex plate/flywheel causing it to start with key in run position. That I can't understand. I replaced the switch but never replaced the ignition cylinder. Is it possible it could be the cylinder and not the switch? Or may e replace both. It starts in run position and you hear the grinding noise but when you put it in drive or reverse it will go away but if you put it back in park the grinding comes back. Im trying what you suggested tomorrow. I'll let ya know my findings but in all honestly I'm ruling out flex plate because the vehicle starts in run position so it's sending voltage and causing starter to crank and vehicle to start when it's not suppose to. Thanks!

Hi, I have the exact same problem! Just payed $1600 to have the starter motor and the ignition barrel changed by my local hyundai dealer. The car is still doing the same thing! Could you please tell me if you know what the problem is before they make me pay more money for no reason :(

Hello,

It sounds like the flywheel needs to be replaced but to be sure can you please shoot a quick video with your phone so we can hear the noise? That would be great. You can upload it here with your response.

Have the same problem with a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban. Started after mechanic replaced shift cable. Replaced starter, and ignition/start switch. Same problem. New transmission installed (unrelated) and new torque converter. With tranny install, new flywheel and the mechanic is asking for another starter (third in 12 months) and shim plate. Does not make sense to me because loud mechanical clatter like metal plate in fan blades goes away in D, 1, 2, 3 (all conditions where neutral safety switch is engaged). I can't imagine the solenoid is bad on 2 starters in a row. I'm thinking of a bad relay or welded wire. Is it more likely that it really was a bad flywheel runing starters? I'll let everyone know what we figure out.
