2004 GMC Sonoma 4 x 4 just stopped working, how do i locate

2004 GMC Sonoma 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

the 4 x 4 hi lite comes on, I hear a click, front wheels do not operate ( spin on Ice). Where do i look for the problem?

The common problem is a bad vacuum line to the actuator for the front axle. The actuator is under the battery. Not a great place for it if the battery ever leaks.

You can find the vacuum line where it comes out from under the battery tray, then follow it up to the solenoid. Then from there up to the intake. Look for cracks holes or damage. (I usually just replace them, they get crappy over time) Put a vacuum gauge on the hose and make sure you have vacuum when you select 4X4. If you have vacuum before the solenoid check after it. Then remove the battery and tray and check the actuator itself, they can tear, have acid holes or the clips to the cable can fail.

I've seen several of these trucks with a bad switch in the dash. they light up like they should but don't actuate anything.

The switch problem usually shows by the lights flashing when you push them and nothing else. The click the OP hears means the switch is triggering the TCCM.
Likely not a bad switch.

well he said he hears it click in but it still doesn't work.
that's the exact scenerio I've seen. one on a blazer and one of a s/10.
both of them we replaced the switches and viola...fixed.
