I have a 1994 GMC Sonoma with 146,000 miles. It idles very rough, does not stall, & failed the idle portion of the smog test. I had this issue in 2004 & they replaced the EGR valve, fuel delivery & return line, & fuel injector spyder. Could it need the same repairs again? This would be the 4th EGR valvue. Is the vehicle worth repairing? Thanks for your help.

EGR valve has piece of carbon stuck in it preventing it from closing.

Remove EGR valve and clean it. It should then be ok.

Change garage if they are replacing EGR valves unnecessarily (or saying they are changing it but only cleaning it).

To prevent problem in the future, install gasket with screen to prevent carbon particles from entering valve.

Excessive running of engine with EGR stuck open will cause exhaust to dirty intake manifold including air filter. Air filter should be checked/replaced after cleaniing EGR valve.
